Sports-Player Ranking System

Use this spreadsheet to rank the participants in a monthly or weekly sports game (I used it for a monthly poker tournament I hosted). Simply enter the name of the participants and their finish in the game for each tournament and the ranking calculator does the rest. The ranking is based on the number of participants for the particular game divided by the players finish, hence if a player finishes 1rst and there were 12 participants he gets 12 points. The more participants in a tournament the more points the winner gets. There can be a fairly big drop from first to second which seems appropriate as finishing first requires a lot more effort than finishing 2nd, 3rd or 4th. Conversely there is not much difference in points awarded for lower finishers as there is not much difference in someone who goes out last versus someone who goes out next to last. This spreadsheet is available in Microsoft Excel and Apple Numbers format. It supports up to a 101 participants. One can base the rankings on 6, 12 or 20 games performance. Personally I like to base the rankings on a 6 game total as this may give participants an incentive to continue to participate so they can maintain their ranking.
Use this calculator to rank players/teams in a recurring home sporting event such as chess tournaments, Texas Hold-Em Games, Bowling, Tennis tournaments etc.
